About the Split PDF
Split PDF takes one PDF and turns it into smaller files. You can extract the pages you select into a single new PDF, save every page as its own file, create one file per page range you type, or cut the document into parts with the same number of pages.
Use it to send only the relevant pages of a long report, separate scanned documents that were saved together, or break a large file into pieces that fit an e-mail attachment limit.
Page previews are drawn with PDF.js and the new files are written with pdf-lib, both running in your browser. When several files are created, they are packed into one ZIP download. Your PDF is not uploaded.
How to use it
- Click “Choose a PDF file” or drag a PDF onto the box. Page previews appear below.
- Pick a split mode: “Extract pages”, “Every page”, “Custom ranges” or “Every N pages”.
- For “Extract pages”, click the pages you want or type them, for example 1-3, 5, 8-10. The buttons All, None, Odd pages and Even pages select pages in one step.
- For “Custom ranges”, type one range per output file, separated by commas – for example 1-3, 4-6, 7-. For “Every N pages”, enter the number of pages per file.
- Check the labels under the previews: they show which output file each page goes to.
- Click the button (for example “Extract 4 pages” or “Split into 3 files”), then download the PDF or the ZIP. Individual files from a ZIP can also be downloaded one by one.
Features
- Four ways to split: Extract a selection into one PDF, split into single pages, split by your own ranges, or split into equal parts of N pages.
- Visual page selection: Click page previews to select them, use Shift+click for a span, or type ranges – the selection and the range field stay in sync.
- Clear range checking: Pages that do not exist, reversed ranges like 5-3 and typing mistakes are reported immediately with a hint how to fix them.
- ZIP or single files: Multiple results are bundled into one ZIP with descriptive names such as report-pages-4-6.pdf, and each file can also be saved on its own.
- Lossless and private: Pages are copied without re-compression, and everything happens on your device.
Examples
Send one chapter
A 120-page manual is too long to e-mail. Choose “Extract pages”, type 34-51 and download just that chapter as manual-extracted.pdf.
Separate scanned letters
A scanner saved five two-page letters into one 10-page PDF. Choose “Every N pages”, enter 2 and get a ZIP with five files.
Split by sections
For a report with an introduction on pages 1-2, results on 3-9 and appendices from page 10, choose “Custom ranges” and type 1-2, 3-9, 10-.
Limitations and notes
- Password-protected and encrypted PDFs, including files that only restrict editing or printing, cannot be split.
- Bookmarks are not copied to the new files, form fields are no longer fillable (their current appearance usually stays visible), and digital signatures are not valid in the output. Links to pages within the same output file keep working; links to other pages are removed.
- Each output file needs its own copy of shared resources such as fonts, so all parts together can be larger than the original file.
- Previews of pages with complex graphics can take a moment to appear, and very large documents need a lot of memory – a desktop browser is more reliable than a phone for files over about 100 MB.
Frequently asked questions
How do I extract a single page from a PDF?
Choose “Extract pages”, click that page’s preview (or type its number), and click “Extract 1 page”. The page is saved as a new PDF.
What range formats can I type?
Single pages (5), ranges (1-3) and open ranges to the last page (8-), separated by commas. Spaces are optional and an en dash works like a hyphen. Page numbers start at 1.
Why do I get a ZIP file?
When the split creates more than one PDF, the files are combined into a ZIP so you only need one download. You can also expand “Download files individually” to save the PDFs one at a time.
Does splitting change the quality of my pages?
No. Pages are copied as they are – text stays searchable and images keep their original quality.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The previews and the new PDFs are created in your browser. The file never leaves your device.
