About the Image Converter

The Image Converter changes the file format of your pictures. Turn PNG screenshots into compact JPG files, convert WebP or AVIF images saved from the web into JPG for programs that cannot open them, or create WebP versions of photos for a website. Up to 20 files can be converted in one go.

JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP files can be opened in all current browsers; AVIF files only where the browser can decode AVIF. Transparent images keep their transparency as PNG or WebP, and get a background colour of your choice when converted to JPG.

Conversion uses the image decoder and encoder built into your browser, so your files are processed on your device and never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Choose the target format under "Convert to": JPG, PNG or WebP.
  2. For JPG and WebP, set the Quality (92 by default). For JPG, choose the colour that replaces transparent areas.
  3. Click "Choose images", drag files onto the box or paste an image. Conversion starts right away.
  4. Check the new size of each file, and click Preview to compare it with the original.
  5. Download the files one by one, or click "Download all (ZIP)".
  6. To convert the same images to another format, change the setting and click "Apply new settings to all images".

Features

  • Common input formats: Reads JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP files, and AVIF in browsers that support it. The real file type is detected from the file content, not just the extension.
  • Three output formats: JPG for photos and maximum compatibility, PNG for lossless quality and transparency, WebP for small files with transparency support.
  • Transparency handling: PNG and WebP keep transparent areas. For JPG, transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you pick (white by default), and each affected file is marked in the list.
  • Batch conversion and ZIP download: Convert up to 20 images of up to 50 MB each and download them individually or together in one ZIP file.
  • Automatic WebP check: The tool tests whether your browser can create WebP files and disables the option if it cannot, instead of silently producing a different format.

Examples

WebP to JPG

A product photo saved from a website as .webp will not open in an older photo editor. Convert it to JPG at quality 92 and it opens in practically any program.

Transparent logo to JPG

An online form only accepts JPG, but your logo is a PNG with a transparent background. Convert it to JPG with a white background – or pick your brand colour – so the logo does not end up on black.

JPG to PNG before editing

Converting to PNG stores the current pixels without further loss while you keep editing the image elsewhere. It does not restore detail already lost in the JPG, and the PNG file will be considerably larger.

Limitations and notes

  • Browsers can only write JPG, PNG and WebP. Converting to GIF, BMP, TIFF, AVIF, HEIC, ICO or SVG is not possible.
  • HEIC/HEIF photos from iPhones, TIFF and SVG files are not supported as input. AVIF input works only if your browser can decode AVIF.
  • Animated GIF, PNG and WebP files are converted using their first frame only.
  • Some browsers, notably Safari, cannot create WebP files; the WebP option is disabled there.
  • Conversion removes EXIF metadata such as camera details and GPS location, and colour profiles may be converted to sRGB. Converting a JPG to PNG does not bring back quality the JPG has already lost.
  • Each file can be up to 50 MB, and images up to 50 megapixels can be converted. Phones and tablets may run out of memory with very large images.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PNG to JPG without a black background?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels need a colour. Some converters turn them black. This tool fills them with white by default; you can choose any other colour under "Background for transparent areas" before converting.

Does converting to JPG reduce the quality?

JPG is a lossy format, so a little detail is always lost. At quality 90–95 the difference is very hard to see in photos. For screenshots, text and graphics with sharp edges, PNG or WebP usually look better.

Can I convert HEIC photos from my iPhone?

No. Most browsers cannot decode HEIC, so this tool cannot open such files. On the iPhone you can switch the camera to "Most Compatible" (Settings › Camera › Formats) so new photos are saved as JPG, or share or export existing photos as JPG.

Why is the WebP option greyed out?

Your browser does not have a WebP encoder – Safari, for example, can display WebP but writes PNG when asked to create one. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox to create WebP files, or choose JPG or PNG.

How many images can I convert at once?

Up to 20 images per batch, each up to 50 MB. When you are done, click "Clear all" and add the next set.

Are my images uploaded?

No. All conversions happen in your browser on your device; the files are not sent to any server.
